Description

For sample adults and sample children in 2007 who had used a special diet during the past 12 months (DITATKINYR, DITMACYR, DITORNYR, DITPRITYR, DITSBYR, DITVEGYR, or DITZONYR), DITWEIGHTCON indicates whether the special diet was used for either weight control or weight loss.

When sample adults and respondents for sample children were initially asked about their use of special diets, they were asked if they had used the diet in the past year for two weeks or more for health reasons (see, for example, DITATKINYR). DITWEIGHTCON provides a "Yes" or "No" response as to whether the special diet was used for either weight control or weight loss. It does not distinguish between respondents who used the diet for "weight control" versus those who used the diet for "weight loss."

Sample adults and respondents for sample children were also asked if they had used a special diet to treat a particular health problem or condition (DITTREAT) and were asked to specify that condition. One related condition that could be reported is "weight problem" (DITTWEIGHT).

For more information on the full range of variables related to special diets, including definitions, see DITATKINYR.

Comparability

There is a difference in question wording between sample adults and sample children for DITWEIGHTCON.

Sample adults were asked, "Did you use the [fill: diet used most] diet for weight control or weight loss?" (See DITMOST for the special diet used most by sample adults.)

Respondents for sample children were asked, "Did [fill: sample child's name] use [fill: this diet/these diets] for weight control or weight loss?"

Thus, respondents for sample children were asked about all special diets the child had used in the past year (i.e., "these diets"), but sample adults were only asked about the diet they had used most. A sample adult who, for example, had briefly tried one diet for weight loss, but then used another diet for a longer period of time for reasons other than weight control or weight loss, would likely respond "No" to DITWEIGHTCON. However, given those same circumstances, a sample child would likely have a "Yes" response reported on his/her behalf.
