Description

For sample persons ages 18 and older, DISABLEOBS reports if the person has a disabling condition or was physically handicapped, according to the field representative's best judgment or previous information.

Persons who were determined to have a disabling condition were asked if they had done any exercises, sports, or active hobbies in the past two weeks (EXERANY2WKPH). EXERANY2WKPH is used as a screener question to allow field representatives to determine if they should skip a series of questions about sports activities that might make a person with a disabling condition uncomfortable. If persons were judged to have a disabling condition and reported not engaging in physical activity in the past two weeks, then they were excluded from subsequent questions about physical activity.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
