Description

For sample adults who were ever told that they had coronavirus (CVDDIAG) or COVID-19 or tested positive for COVID-19 (CVDTESTRSLT) and lost some or all of their ability to taste or had unwanted tastes or sensations in their mouth that did not go away (CVDLOSETASTE), CVDRECTASTE indicates how much they have recovered their sense of taste.

This variable is one of four COVID-related questions sponsored in 2021 by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). For more information on other sponsored variables related to a loss of taste or smell, see the description for TSTSMDOC.

NCHS added nearly 30 questions related to COVID starting in quarter 3 of the 2020 NHIS questionnaire, eight of which are asked of both sample adults and sample children. For the full list of variables, as well as information about COVID-related changes to the NHIS, please see the user note.
