Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample persons age 17 and older in 1978-1980, and sample persons age 18 and older in 1990, CSQSERTRYEV indicates if the person ever made a serious attempt to stop smoking cigarettes. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for complete information on changes in universe between samples.
Comparability
In 1978 to 1980, this question was asked of sample persons age 17 and older who ever smoked 100 cigarettes or ever smoked regularly, and currently smoke.
In 1990, this question was asked of sample persons age 18 and older who were not asked the smoking questions in the Pregnancy and Smoking section, had ever smoked 100 cigarettes, and who currently smoke.
In 1978 and 1980 this question was asked only in quarters 3 and 4. Changes in survey design affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights. Aside from changes in the universe between years there are no comparability issues with this variable.
