Description
For sample adult women who ever had a cervical cancer test (CRVTSTEV), CRVTSTPAP indicates if they had a Pap test at their most recent cervical cancer screening. According to the 2021 Field Representative's Manual, a Pap smear or Pap test "is a procedure in which cells are removed from the cervix to check for cervical cancer or cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer. A Pap smear may also help find other conditions, such as infections or inflammation." Prior to 2019, NHIS offered a set of related but distinct variables covering the receipt and timing of Pap tests (see PAPHAD1YR).
CRVTSTHPV is fielded every other year (beginning in 2019) as part of a broader set of rotating core NHIS content covering preventive screening. For more information on related variables covering cervical cancer screening tests, please see CRVTSTEV.
