Description
In 2022 for sample adults who ever smoked 100 cigarettes in their entire lives (SMOKEV) and who currently smoke cigarettes every day or some days (SMOKFREQNOW), CIGMENTHOL indicates whether their usual cigarette brand is plain or menthol.
The universe for CIGMENTHOL has changed over time. From 1978-1980, the question was asked of sample adults age 17+ who had ever smoked 100 cigarettes in their entire lives, who had every smoked regularly and are current smokers, or who did not smoke now but had stopped smoking regularly less than 1 year ago. In 2005 this was narrowed to current smokers age 18+ who had ever smoked 100 cigarettes total, and was asked of all current smokers in 2010 and 2015.
Comparability
This variable is not completely comparable over time. Analysts should refer to the universe tab for changes in the universe across years.

Universe
- 1978; 1980: Sample persons age 17+ in quarters 3 and 4 who ever smoked 100 cigarettes in their entire lives, who ever smoked regularly, and who smoke now or who do not smoke now but stopped smoking regularly less than 1 year ago.
- 1979: Sample persons age 17+ who ever smoked 100 cigarettes in their entire lives, who ever smoked regularly, and who smoke now or who do not smoke now but stopped smoking regularly less than 1 year ago.
- 2005: Sample adults 18+ who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their entire life and are current smokers.
- 2010; 2015: Sample adults 18+ who are current smokers.
- 2022: Sample adults 18+ who have ever smoked 100 cigarettes in their lives (SMOKEV) and currently smoke cigarettes every day or some days (SMOKFREQNOW)
