Description

For sample adults, CHOLMEDNOW indicates if the respondent currently takes prescribed medication regularly, that is, at least 3 times a week, to lower their cholesterol level.

Comparability

Analysts should refer to the universe tab for specific but minor changes in the universe across years. Otherwise, CHOLMEDNOW is comparable over time.

Universe

  • 1991: Sample persons age 18+ who ever had their blood cholesterol checked (or don't know whether their cholesterol was checked), who were ever told their cholesterol was high, who were ever prescribed medication to help lower their cholesterol, and who ever took such medication.
  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement) who have ever had their cholesterol checked by a doctor or health professional (or for whom it was unknown if it was ever checked), who were ever told their blood cholesterol was high, and who were ever prescribed medication to lower cholesterol.
  • 1998: Sample adults age 18+ who ever had their blood cholesterol checked (or don't know whether their cholesterol was checked), who were ever told their cholesterol was high, and who were ever prescribed medication to help lower their cholesterol.
  • 2005: Sample adults age 18+.
  • 2015 2016 2017 2018: Sample adults 18+ who were ever prescribed medicine for high cholesterol
