Description

For sample adults who had their cholesterol checked and were ever told their cholesterol is high, CHOLMEDPRE indicates if the respondent has ever been prescribed medication to lower her or his cholesterol level.

Comparability

Other than subtle changes to the universe, CHOLMEDPRE is comparable over time.

The universe for 1993 only includes half of sample persons aged 18 and older in quarters 3 and 4; appropriate weights should address the difference in raw frequencies resulting from this. Beginning in 2015, persons were not first asked about having their cholesterol checked, and were instead asked directly if they had ever been told they have high cholesterol by a doctor or other health professional. Despite these subtle changes, the target universe for all samples is sample adults who have been told they have high blood pressure by a doctor or health professional.

Universe

  • 1991: Sample persons age 18+ who ever had their cholesterol checked (or don't know whether their cholesterol was checked) by a doctor or health professional and were ever told their cholesterol was high.
  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement) who have ever had their cholesterol checked by a doctor or health professional (or for whom it was unknown if blood cholesterol was ever checked) and were ever told their blood cholesterol was high.
  • 1998: Sample adults age 18+ who ever had their cholesterol checked (or don't know whether their cholesterol was checked) by a doctor or health professional and were ever told their cholesterol was high.
