Description
CATARACTYR identifies sample adults who had cataracts during the past 12 months.
In 1999 and 2002, sample adults were asked whether they had ever been told by a doctor or other health care professional that they had cataracts (CATARACTEV). In 2002, those who responded affirmatively were asked whether they had cataracts during the past 12 months.
The Field Representative's Manual for 2002 defined cataracts as "the clouding of the lenses which causes a general loss of detail. This may cause problems with glare or distortion, such as double images." This definition was not routinely shared with respondents.
