Description
For sample adults, CATARACTEV identifies individuals for whom a doctor or other health professional ever diagnosed as having cataracts. Please see the Comparability and Universe tabs for information on how the universe changes over time for this variable.
Comparability
There are differences in the universe between the 1976, 1989, 1991-2017 and 2023 samples. Please consult the universe tab for more information on these differences.
In addition to changes in universe, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
Universe
- 1976: All persons.
- 1989: Persons age 18+ who have ever been told by a doctor they had diabetes other than during pregnancy.
- 1991: Sample persons age 18+.
- 2002; 2008; 2016 2017: Sample adults age 18+.
- 2023: Sample adults age 45+ who have not had cataract surgery or refused to answer or don't know if they had a cataract surgery.
