Description
For sample adults who were ever told they have cataracts (CATARACTEV), CATARACTVLOS indicates if the person ever lost vision because of cataracts. Please see the Universe tab for changes in this variable's universe since 2023.
[show more]The 2008 Field Representative's Manual described cataracts as, "clouding of the lenses which causes a general loss of detail. This may cause problems with glare or distortion, such as double images."
This variable was part of the Sample Adult Vision supplement, sponsored by the National Eye Institute.
Comparability
This variable is largely comparable over time. There was a change in universe starting in 2023; see the Universe tab for details.
