This variable was first introduced as part of the 1998 Sample Adult Prevention supplement and the Year 2000 supplement in 1994. For related variables and more information, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Apart from minor changes in the universe, there are no comparability issues with this variable. In 1994, the category of employment status indicating temporarily absent but employed was not available. In 1994, respondents were only asked if they were employed at a job or business during the past two weeks, not about temporary absence. In 1998, respondents could indicate they had a job, but not at work in the past two weeks. This has minor implications on the comparability of CANSCRENWKUS.
