Times per year consumed butter on foods

BUTRYR is a 4-digit-numeric variable.

0: Never or less than 6 times per year
9995: 9995+
9996: Not in Universe
9999: Unknown-don't know

For sample adults ages 18 and over, BUTRYR is a recoded variable that reports the number of times per year the respondent consumed butter on foods (e.g., on bread, rolls, or vegetables). Interviewers indicated to respondents not to include the use of margarine; margarine use was reported through a separate question later in the survey. Researchers may also want to use BUTRSIZ, which reports the corresponding portion size.

BUTRYR is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
