Description

For sample adults ages 18 and older who buttered their food in the past year, BUTRSIZ reports the size of the portion the person used (small, medium, or large). A medium portion was defined as two pats. Interviewers indicated to respondents not to include the use of margarine; margarine use was reported through a separate question later in the survey. Researchers may wish to use BUTRSIZ in conjunction with BUTRNO, which reports the number of units of butter consumed and BUTRTP, which reports the corresponding time period.

BUTRSIZ is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
