Description
For sample adults who were ever diagnosed by a doctor or other health professional as having "inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel, or constipation severe enough to require medication" (BOWELIRINFEV) and who had this condition during the past 12 months (IRRBOWELYR), BOWELINFYR identifies those who had inflammatory bowel disease during the past 12 months. Interviewers asked, "Which of these did you have in the past 12 months?" and listed "Inflammatory bowel disease" as a possible response. Other possible responses included:
- Irritable bowel (IRRBOWELYR)
- Constipation severe enough to require medication (BOWELCONYR)
Respondents could report more than one condition, as interviewers were instructed to enter all that applied.

Inflammatory bowel disease refers to conditions that cause inflammation of the intestines. The most common forms of inflammatory bowel disease are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. In 1999, information was collected from sample adults on these conditions. CROHNEV identifies sample adults whom a doctor or other health professional ever diagnosed with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. For such persons, CROHNYR identifies those who had symptoms of the condition during the past 12 months, and CROHNAGE reports age when first diagnosed with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
DIARRHEAYR, available for 1997 forward, identifies sample children who had "frequent or repeated diarrhea or colitis" during the past twelve months.
