Description
For persons age 18 and over who ever had spastic colon, functional bowel, irritable colon, or irritable bowel syndrome in the past 12 months, BOWELFUNYR indicates if respondents had functional bowel in the last 12 months. Respondents were asked if they ever had any of the four conditions listed above and could report more than one, as well as "other similar conditions." Respondents were then asked if they ever had any of the four conditions (for example, see BOWELFUNEV).
A definition of functional bowel was not given to the respondent and the term was assumed to be respondent defined. However, the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD) explains that the word "functional" is used to describe symptoms or problems when no anatomical problems are apparent. The affected organs do not function or feel quite right to the patient, but are not affected by specific diseases or structural issues.
BOWELFUNYR was part of the 1989 survey supplement on Digestive Disorders which had 3 sections. The first asked about specific conditions such as gallstones, ulcers or colon or bowel conditions (including BOWELFUNYR). The second asked about abdominal pain (such as ABPAIN3XYR, had abdominal pain 3 or more times, past 12 months). The third was on normative bowel functions, which such as ABGASTRUBYR, had trouble with abdominal gas in the past 12 months.
Related variables for the other conditions mentioned in the question for BOWELFUNYR are included in the Digestive Disorders Supplement.
These include:
- SPASCYR had spastic colon in the past 12 months
- IRCOLYR had irritable colon in the past 12 months
- OSBCONYR had similar bowel condition in the past 12 months
- IRRBOWELYR had irritable bowel syndrome in the past 12 months
