BLOODGAVYR indicates if the sample person gave or sold any of their blood during the past 12 months.

Comparability

Aside from the shift to only included those who had donated blood in the past 12 months for 1988 on, and the differences in universes there are no comparability problems with BLOODGAVYR.

In 1973, this inquiry was directed at sample persons age 17 and older. In 1978, this inquiry was directed at persons age 17 to 64. In 1988, this inquiry was directed at sample persons age 18 years and over in quarters 2, 3 and 4. In 1990-1991, this inquiry was directed at sample persons age 18 years and older who have ever donated blood (BLOODGAVEV), and who have donated blood since March 1985 (BLOODGAVE85). In 1992, this inquiry was directed at half of sample persons age 18 and older who ever donated blood (BLOODGAVEV). In 1993, this inquiry was directed at half of sample persons age 18 and older in quarters 3 and 4 who were excluded from the Y2K supplement who ever donated blood (BLOODGAVEV). In 1994-1995, this inquiry was directed at half of sample persons age 18 years and older who were excluded from the Y2K supplement. In 1989 and 1997-2010, this inquiry was directed at sample persons age 18 years and older.

For years 1988 and on, the question only applied to those who had donated blood in the past 12 months.
