Description

For sample adults who have had symptoms of dizziness or at least one balance problem and for sample children in 2016 who have had episodes of balance problems or dizziness in the past 12 months, this variable reports the age when the symptoms first began.

The question for this variable was part of the Sample Adult and Sample Child Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Comparability

In 2008, persons who reported more than one symptom were asked to report the age when the most bothersome symptom (BALSBOTHER) began. If persons were unsure, interviewers asked them to make a best estimate. In 2016, the question posed to sample children specified that symptoms first begin when the "first episode, bout, or 'attack' of dizziness or balance problem" occurred.
