Description

For sample persons aged 18 and over who have been tested for HIV (in 1990, who ever been tested with last test required), ATRLHINS reports if the reason for the most recent HIV test was because of an application for health insurance. Respondents are asked not to include blood donations.

Please refer to the Comparability and Universe tabs for complete information on question wording and universe.

For 1990 to 1993, respondents whose most recent HIV test was because of an application for life insurance are recorded in ATRLLINS. From 1994 to 1999, HIV tests for life and health insurance are recorded together in ATRLINS.

Comparability

Changes in the universe affect comparability between 1990 and subsequent years. In 1990, this question was asked of persons who had ever been tested for HIV and whose last test was required. In 1991 onward, this question was asked of persons who had ever been tested for HIV.

There are also changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) that affect the raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
