Description

For sample persons ages 18 and over who have ever had their blood tested for the AIDS virus infection, who got the results of their blood test, and who received counseling (in 1993) or had a health professional talk with them (in 1994-1995) about the AIDS virus when they received the results of their test, ATRESHPTALK reports if one of the topics covered in the discussion was abstinence from sex.

Comparability

Changes in wording may affect comparability between samples. In 1993, respondents were screened based on whether they received "any counseling about the AIDS virus" when they received the results of their last test. In 1994 and 1995, respondents were screened based on whether a health professional talked with them about AIDS when they were given the results of their last test.

Other than changes in wording, there are no comparability issues with this variable. Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
