Description

For sample persons ages 18 and over who have had their blood tested for the AIDS virus infection, ATPROTH reports if the reason for the blood test was for any reason other than employment, health insurance, life insurance, hospitalization or surgery, immigration, military induction or service, or to apply for a marriage license (1991 and 1992 only). Comparability

Changes in universe and question wording affect comparability between samples. In 1990, this question was asked of persons who have had more than one (or an unknown number of) blood tests for the AIDS virus, when at least one was required, and the question asked if the test was "required for some other reason." In 1991 and 1992 the question was asked of persons who have ever had a blood test for the AIDS virus, and the question asked if the test was "for some other reason." Changes in available response categories, by which one can interpret other, also affect the comparability of the "other" category across samples.

Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
