Description

For sample adults ages 18 and older who had their blood tested for the AIDS virus as part of some activity that requires a blood sample and automatic AIDS testing, ATPLOTH reports if the respondent's blood was tested at a location other than an AIDS testing site, drug treatment facility, family planning clinic, prenatal clinic, STD clinic, tuberculosis clinic, work clinic, military induction or immigration site.

Respondents who reported having donated blood after 1985 were not included in this sample unless they specifically reported having had an AIDS test. NHIS has released a version of this variable in which persons who did not report having had an AIDS test but did report donating blood since March 1985 were re-classified as "Unknown - Not Ascertained." The alternative variable does not differ from this variable in frequencies for respondent-provided codes.

Comparability

There are no comparability issues with this variable. Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
