Description

For sample persons ages 18 and over who have ever had a blood test for the AIDS virus infection, ATLCOUNBD reports if the person received counseling about the transmission, prevention, or treatment of AIDS or about the meaning of the test at the time of their most recent test. Comparability

Changes in survey text may affect comparability between samples. In 1990, the question asked whether the respondent was "counseled about the AIDS virus and the meaning of the blood test" before his or her last test. In 1991 and 1992, the respondent was asked if he or she received counseling "discussing transmission, prevention, or treatment of AIDS virus infection" at the time of his or her last test. In 1993, the respondent was asked if he or she received counseling "discussing transmission, prevention, or treatment of AIDS virus infection or the meaning of the test... at the time they drew blood" for his or her last test.

Aside from changes in survey text there are no comparability issues with this variable. Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
