Description

For sample persons ages 18 and older who have had a blood test for the AIDS virus, ATEVNO reports the total number of times the respondent has had his or her blood tested for the AIDS virus. Respondents who indicated that they had not heard of or had a blood test for the AIDS virus but had donated blood after 1985 were not included in this sample.

Comparability

The source variable for 1988 and 1989 includes persons who have never heard of the blood test for the AIDS virus infection with those who reported never having had the blood test as having had 0 tests. IPUMS NHIS recodes those persons as NIU to maintain comparability between samples.

Aside from the change in universe, there are no additional comparability issues with this variable. Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IHIS weights.
