Description

For sample adults who still have asthma (ASTHMASTIL) or who had an asthma episode/attack in the past 12 months (ASTHATAKYR), ASTHWKRETOLD reports whether they were ever told by a health professional that their asthma was work-related. Prior to 2020, ASTHWKRETOLD is asked of sample adults age 18+ who are currently employed or were employed at some time in the past 12 months, who still have asthma, and 1) who were at least age 16 when their asthma was diagnosed or 2) who were under age 16 when diagnosed and their asthma has gotten worse as an adult or 3) whose age at diagnosis is unknown.

Comparability

While the basic meaning of this variable is completely comparable over time, major questionnaire changes introduced in 2019 may affect comparability with earlier years. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
