Description
For sample persons age 55 and over, this variable indicates if the respondent had arthritis or rheumatism, past 12 months. Definitions of arthritis and rheumatism were not provided to respondents and were assumed to be defined by the respondent. The inquiry did not require diagnosis of these conditions by a medical doctor or health professional.
[show more]ARTHORHEUMYR variable was part of the 1984 Supplement on Aging, which asked respondents if they had or ever had vision, hearing, heart, and bone conditions and other impairments.
Along with ARTHORHEUMYR, respondents were asked if they had any 4 other conditions in the past 12 months, and could indicate as many as necessary.

- BLOODCLOTYR had blood clots in arms/legs/lungs
- ANEURYSMYR had an aneurysm
- VARICOSEYR had varicose veins
They were then asked a series of 5 questions on falls in the last 12 months (FELYR).
