Description
For persons age 20 and older, DIABETICYR identifies those who had "diabetes or sugar diabetes" during the past 12 months.
The Field Representative's Manual for 1977 contains the following "Note" related to this variable:
We are only interested in diabetes or sugar diabetes. If some other response is given, reask the question. If you still receive some other type of diabetes, consider this as 'No' and continue with the next question as appropriate.
The codebook for the public use file of the 1977 NHIS warns that these data on diabetes (along with similarly-collected data on hypertension, heart disease, and blood clots) "were collected for classification purposes only and not to ascertain prevalence estimates."
