Description

For sample persons age 18 and over, ALCSTATYNO reports if the person had at least 12 drinks of any kind of alcohol during his or her entire life and if the respondent has had at least 12 drinks of any kind of alcohol in the any one year.

In 1990, respondents were also asked if they have had at least one drink of beer, wine, or liquor during the past year. Respondents who answered no to all questions were coded as "non-drinker (total abstinence)." Respondents who had had alcohol during their life, but less than 12 drinks in any one year were coded as "non-drinker (less than 12 drinks in a year)."

ALCSTATYNO was part of a supplement on alcohol practices in 1983 and a supplement on Health Prevention and Disease Promotion periodically included in the NHIS which helped measure national goals towards the Health People Initiative of the U.S. Surgeon General.
