Description

ALCMOSBEFOR indicates the number of months the person had one or more drinks in the twelve months before his or her last drink.

In 1983, this question was asked of sample persons ages 18 and older who have had twelve drinks in any year of their life and whose last drink was either more than a year ago, or whose last drink was more than two weeks but the person also reported having quit drinking.

In 1988, this question was asked of sample persons ages 18 and over who have had twelve drinks in the past year and at least one drink in the last two weeks.

Comparability

Due to a change in universe, response to the 1983 variable should not be compared directly to the 1988 variable. Respondents in 1983 were persons who have either reported quitting drinking or who have not had a drink in the past year. Respondents in 1988 were persons who are current alcohol drinkers. Universe

  • 1983: Sample persons ages 18+ who have had twelve drinks in any year of their life and whose last drink was more than a year ago OR who did not drink in the past two weeks and reported having quit drinking.
  • 1988: Sample persons ages 18+ who have had twelve drinks in the past year and at least one drink in the last two weeks.
