Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample persons ages 18 and older who have had a blood test for the AIDS virus, AIDTYR if the respondent has had his or her blood tested for the AIDS virus in the past 12 months. Respondents who indicated that they had not heard of or had a blood test for the AIDS virus but had donated blood after 1985 were not included in this sample. See the Comparability and Universe tabs for complete information on changes to the universe between samples.
Comparability
A change of universe affects comparability between samples from 1988 to 1995 to samples from 1997 to 1999. From 1988 to 1995, the question was asked only of sample adults who did not report having multiple tests for the AIDS virus infection. From 1997 to 1999, any adult who reported having been tested for the AIDS virus was included in the universe.
Aside from minor changes to the survey text (see the Survey Text tab for more detail), there are no additional comparability issues with this variable. Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
