Description

For sample persons ages 18 and older, AIDTNYR reports if the respondent expects to have an HIV test in the next twelve months. See the Comparability and Universe tabs for complete information on question wording and universe.

Comparability

Changes in question wording may affect comparability between samples. From 1987 to 1997, respondents are specifically asked if they expect to have a blood test. In 1998, the survey instrument and Field Representative's Manual were changed to use only the word "test." In 1999 the codebook was also changed to reflect the new wording.

In addition, from 1987 to 1991 respondents were asked if they expect to have a test in the next twelve months. From 1992 forward, respondents are asked if they expect to have a test in the next twelve months not including blood donation.

The wording of this question also changed with medical terminology. From 1987 to 1999, respondents were asked if they "expect to have a/another test for the AIDS virus infection." Beginning in 2000, respondents were asked if they "expect to have a/another test for HIV."

Changes in universe may also affect comparability between samples. In 1987, respondents were screened based on having ever thought about having a blood test for AIDS. From 1988 to 1990 respondents were screened based on having "heard of a blood test that can detect the AIDS virus infection." From 1991 forward, all adults in the sample group were asked the question.

Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
