Description

For sample adults ages 18 and over who have ever been tested for HIV, AIDTLYEAR reports the year of the respondent's most recent HIV test. Respondents who reported having donated blood after 1985 were not included in this sample unless they specifically reported having had an AIDS test. This variable can be combined with AIDTLMONTH (month of last HIV test) for the complete month and year of the person's last HIV test.

Comparability

There are no comparability issues with this variable. Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1990: Sample adults age 18+ who have ever heard of a blood test for HIV and have ever been tested for HIV.
  • 1991: Sample adults age 18+ who have ever been tested for HIV.
  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ who have ever been tested for HIV.
  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in Q3 and Q4 (excluded from Y2K supplement) who have ever been tested for HIV.
  • 1994-1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from Y2K supplement) who have ever been tested for HIV.
  • 2000-2010: Sample adults age 18+ who have ever been tested for HIV.
