Description
For sample persons ages 18 and over who have ever been tested for HIV/AIDS, AIDTLNAME reports if the respondent was required to give his or her name the last time he or she was tested.
Comparability
Changes in universe may reduce comparability between samples. For the 1994 and 1995 samples, only respondents who answered a screener question about the type of location where they had their "last blood test for the AIDS virus" were asked this question. From 2000 to 2010, any person who responded that they have ever been tested for HIV was asked this question.
Changes in survey text may also affect comparability. In 1994 and 1995, the test was referred to as a "blood test for the AIDS virus," and respondents were asked if they were "required" to give their names. For 2000 and forward the test was referred to as being "tested for HIV," and respondents were asked if they had to "give your first and last names."
Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters and subsample) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
Universe
- 1994-1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from Y2K supplement) who have ever had blood tested for AIDS virus infection and who had their last blood test at an AIDS clinic, community health clinic, employer-run clinic, STD clinic, family planning/prenatal clinic, other clinic, or an other or unknown location for last test.
- 2000-2010: Sample adults age 18+ who have been tested for HIV.
