Description

For sample adults ages 18 and over who have ever been tested for HIV (or, from 1997 to 1999, been tested for HIV in the past 12 months), AIDTLLOC reports the location of the respondent's most recent HIV test (e.g. AIDS clinic, hospital, military induction, etc.). Respondents who reported having donated blood after 1985 were not included in this sample unless they specifically reported having had an AIDS test. Please see the Comparability and Universe tabs for complete information on question wording and universe.

Comparability

Changes in response categories may affect comparability between samples. See the Codes tab for a complete listing. Seven types of testing location types were included in all samples (AIDS clinic/counseling/testing site, Hospital/ER/outpatient clinic, Other type of clinic, Doctor/HMO, Military induction or service, Immigration site, and Other location).

A significant change in universe limits comparability of samples from 1997 to 1999 with samples outside that range. In all other years, adults who had ever been tested for HIV were included. From 1997 to 1999, the question was only asked of adults who had been tested for HIV in the past 12 months. Although the worded definition refers to adults who have ever been tested, the "past 12 months" question was used as a screener and the frequency of sample adults tested in the past 12 months matches the frequency of responses to this question.

Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
