Description

For sample adults ages 18 and over who have ever been tested for the AIDS virus infection (from 1997 to 1999, tested within the past 12 months), AIDTLGRES reports if the respondent got the results of his or her last test. See Comparability and Universe tabs for changes in wording and universe between samples. Respondents who reported donating blood from 1985 forward were not included unless they specifically reported having had an AIDS test.

Comparability

Changes in universe limit comparability of samples pre- and post-1997. From 1988 to 1995, the question was asked of sample adults who have ever been tested for the AIDS virus infection. From 1997 to 1999, the question was only asked of sample adults who have been tested in the last 12 months.

In addition, changes in wording may affect comparability between samples. From 1988 to 1997, the question specifically referred to the respondent having his or her blood tested. In 1998 and 1999, the question simply asks if the respondent has ever been tested for the AIDS virus infection without specifying a method.

From 1988 to 1993, respondents were only able to provide a yes or no answer. Beginning in 1994 and going forward, respondents were given an additional response: "Only notified if there was a problem."

Changes in survey design (e.g. subsamples or quarters) affect raw numbers but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
