Description

For sample persons age 18 and older in 1991 and 1992, and sample person age 18 and older who ever knew anyone personally who had AIDS or the AIDS virus in 1993-1995, AIDKNOPCOW reports if the person she/he knew personally was a co-worker.

This variable is part of the NHIS supplement on AIDS knowledge and attitudes. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

The wording of the question changes slightly between years. In 1991 and 1992, the question asked "Have you ever had a co-worker who had AIDS or the AIDS virus?" In 1993-1995, persons were first asked "Have you ever known anyone personally who had AIDS or the AIDS virus?" and if they responded "yes", were then asked "Who was that - a friend, co-worker, or someone else?" More than one type of person could be reported in response to the question asked in 1993-1995.

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
