Description

For sample persons ages 18 and over who had abdominal pain 3 or more times in the past 12 months, ABPMOSTCON reports which condition caused the MOST pain during the past 12 months. In a previous survey question, respondents could list up to five conditions that they thought caused the abdominal pain (ABPTHINCON1, ABPTHINCON2, ABPTHINCON3, ABPTHINCON4, and ABPTHINCON5). For respondents who mentioned only one condition, ABPMOSTCON reports the single condition mentioned.

This variable is part of the Abdominal Pain section of the Digestive Disease Supplement, introduced in the 1989 survey. This supplement focuses on digestive conditions, primarily during the previous 12 months, to provide data for prevalence estimates on certain common digestive disorders and complaints. The Abdominal Pain section provides data to compare diagnosed and undiagnosed irritable bowel syndrome, and to describe pain accompanying this or other conditions that affect the abdomen.
