Description
For all sample individuals, CURRESPALG indicates whether they currently have respiratory allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, or itchy or watery eyes due to hay fever, seasonal or year-round allergies. The follow-up question to this is RESPALLERGY. The ordering of these questions is deliberate and is used to distinguish between individuals who self-diagnose and individuals who have been diagnosed by a health professional. Individuals are first asked if they have a current respiratory allergy, if they respond with "yes", they will be then asked if the allergy was diagnosed by a health professional.
Similar yet distinguished variables include HAYFEVERYR and RALLERGYR. HAYFEVERYR refers to having respiratory allergy symptoms due to only hay fever and RALLERGYR refers to having respiratory allergy symptoms due to allergies excluding hay fever.
For related allergy variables see FALLERGYR.
