Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults aged 40 or older who have had either a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy (COLORECTEV), COLSIGEV indicates whether the person has ever had a colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, both, or neither.
The 2019 NHIS questionnaire offers the following definition of the two procedures:
"For a colonoscopy, the doctor checks the entire colon, and you are given medication through a needle in your arm to make you sleep, and told to have someone take you home. For a sigmoidoscopy, the doctor checks only part of the colon and you are fully awake."
To increase comparability over time, IPUMS NHIS staff constructed COLSIGEV for 2010, 2013, 2015, and 2018 using responses to COLEV and SIGEV. Those who responded "yes" to COLEV only were coded to "Colonoscopy," those who responded "yes" to SIGEV only were coded to "Sigmoidoscopy," those who responded "yes" to COLEV and SIGEV were coded to "Both," and those who responded "no" to COLEV and SIGEV were coded to "Neither."
Comparability
This variable is completely comparable prior to 2019. For 2019 forward, comparability will be affected by changes over time and the 2019 questionnaire redesign. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
