Description
For sample children 3 and over who have been given a diagnosis for a voice, swallowing, speech, or language problem, CVLDIAGVOC reports whether the child received a diagnosis for a voice problem.
Persons who answered affirmatively were then asked for the diagnosis or reason given; persons could report multiple causes. The causes for the voice problems are reported in the following variables:
: laryngitis
: head or neck injury
: allergies or airborne irritants
: tissue damage in throat
: laryngeal growths
: cancer in head, neck or throat
: neurological problem
: congenital malformation/birth defect
: gastroesophageal reflux
: prescription medication
: something else
According to the Field Representative's Manual, voice disorders are "a group of problems involving abnormal pitch, loudness, or quality of the sound produced by the larynx (voice box)."
