Description
For sample adults ages 18 and older who have ever had a diagnosis for a swallowing problem that lasted a week or longer, VSLSWOTHER reports whether the respondent's swallowing problem was caused by something other than the reasons listed as response categories in the survey. These response categories include stroke, neurological cause (Alzheimers, Parkinson's, post-polio syndrome, dementia, etc.), cancer anywhere in the head/neck/throat, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure, head/neck injury, arthritic changes in the neck, advancing age, and prescription medication or drugs.
VSLSWOTHER is part of the Adult Voice, Speech and Language Supplement. For related variables and more information, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus, or see VSLDIAG, which reports on diagnosis, VSLVDAYS, which reports on the problem duration and extent, and VSLVSLPYR, which reports on treatment.
