Description
For sample adults ages 18 and older (2012) and all sample persons 3 or older (starting in 2022), VSLSPYR reports if the person had a speech problem in the past year, such as stuttering, repeating words, or not being able to pronounce words properly. The questionnaire further specified that this question refers to the language in which the person is most comfortable, not a foreign language.
VSLSPYR is part of the Adult Voice, Speech and Language Supplement. For related variables and more information, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus, or see VSLDIAG, which reports on diagnosis, VSLVDAYS, which reports on the problem duration and extent, and VSLVSLPYR, which reports on treatment.
Starting in 2022, the sample child version of this variable, CVVCDIF, was combined into a single variable, VSLVYR.
Also starting in 2022, this variable is now a part of the Voice, Swallowing, Speech, and Language Communication Disorders section of sponsored content in the NHIS survey. Please see VSLDIAG for more information on this section.
For more voice, swallowing, speech, and language communication disorder variables, please see VSLDIAG.
Comparability
Major questionnaire changes introduced in 2019 may affect comparability with earlier years. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
