Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults over age 40, BSTHYL reports the main reason for the person's most recent home blood stool test: whether it was part of a routine exam, because of a problem, or some other reason.
Comparability
This variable is comparable across survey years, despite some changes in response codes and question wording.
Beginning in 2005, response codes for "Follow up test of an earlier test/screening exam" and "Family history" were collapsed into "Other." Otherwise, response codes are consistent across time.
In 2015, the wording of the question asking whether respondents had ever had a home blood stool test BSTHEV changed slightly to more inclusive language. Prior to 2015, respondents were asked whether they ever had "a blood stool test, using a HOME test kit?" Beginning in 2015, respondents were asked whether they had ever had "a blood stool or FIT test, using a HOME test kit?"
