Description

For sample adults, TIREFREQ3MO reports how often, in the past three months, they felt very tired or exhausted.

Beginning in 2020, TIREFREQ3MO is one of a set of rotating core variables on fatigue, collected every other year. The fatigue rotating core variables were also collected in previous years, as part of the Adult Functioning and Disability supplement (2011-2017) and sample adult questionnaire (2018). In addition to TIREFREQ3MO, the fatigue rotating core variables include:

  • TIREFEELEVL: Level of exhaustion, last time had exhaustion

Also beginning in 2020, the NHIS collected a rotating core set of variables on sleep duration and quality. Please see HRSLEEP for more information about the sleep rotating core.

The NHIS also collected several additional variables on fatigue as part of the 2010 Quality of Life supplement:

  • TIREFEELCLAR: Clarification of in-between amount of exhaustion
  • TIREYWORKEX: Reason exhausted: Too much work or exercise
  • TIREYHEALTH: Reason exhausted: Physical or health-related problem

Comparability

Changes in the survey design (e.g., the subsample for which the questions were administered) may affect raw frequencies. In 2010, this item was collected for sample adults who completed the Quality of Life supplement (administered to approximately a quarter of sample adults). In 2011-2017, this item was collected for sample adults who completed the Adult Functioning and Disability supplement (administered to a subset of sample adults). Beginning in 2018, this item was included on the sample adult questionnaire. Please refer to the Weights section for information about sample-specific weights. As always, users should employ the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Questionnaire design changes introduced in 2019 limit comparability with earlier years. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.

Universe

  • 2010: One quarter of sample adults, included in quality of life supplement (and excluded from family disability supplement).
  • 2011-2017: Sample adults 18+ who were selected to receive the family disability questions (FDB), and were randomly selected to receive the Functioning and Disability (AFD) section.
  • 2018: Sample adults aged 18 and older.
  • 2020 2022: Sample adults age 18+.
