Description
For persons who lost coverage due to a job loss or lay-off (i.e. private, employer sponsored health care), HINOMO is recoded variable that indicates the length of time in months they did not have any health insurance or any coverage through any public programs (such as Medicaid, Aid to Families with Dependent Children or military health care).
Persons who lost coverage due to a job layoff were first asked about if they were without any health insurance for anytime during the layoff, and for how many months. They were then asked about the number of months they were covered by any public health program during the lay-off.
Comparability
Apart from changes in the universe, there are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
This variable is not directly comparable with the variable for 1993 to 1996 which indicates months without coverage (HINOLAPYMO), or the variable for 1997 forward (HINOTYRMO) as these indicate months without coverage though not necessarily due to a job loss. These two variables (HINOLAPYMO and HINOTRYMO) are different from each other in that single service plans were not considered to be health insurance for 1997 forward whereas for 1993 to 1996, single service plans were considered to be a form of health insurance.

- 1983: Persons in quarters 3 or 4 who lost health insurance coverage due to the insurance carrier's job layoff(s) or job loss(as) and who were not covered by any health care program, such as Medicaid, AFDC, military benefit programs or Medicare.
- 1984; 1986: Persons who lost health insurance coverage due to the insurance carrier's job layoff(s) or job loss(as) and who were not covered by any health care program, such as Medicaid, AFDC, military benefit programs or Medicare.
