Description
For all persons, HIDENY reports whether, in the past 2 years, someone in the family applied for health insurance but was turned down.
From 1993 to 1996, health insurance was defined as any type of health plan, including single service plans, that paid for hospital, doctor or surgeon's bills.
Please use the IPUMS NHIS drop down menu and search functions for related variables.
Comparability
Apart from changes in the universe, there are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.
