Description

For all persons, this variable indicates how much respondents (or the family) spent on medical care in the past 12 months excluding the cost of over-the-counter medications, insurance premiums, or any costs for which they expected to be reimbursed. Respondents were handed a card which listed 6 intervals, from $0 to $5000 or more, and asked to indicate a category.

Comparability

There are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
