Description

For sample adults who had seen a traditional healer during the past 12 months (FOKBOTANYR, FOKCURANYR, FOKESPIRYR, FOKNAMYR, FOKSHAMYR, FOKSOBADYR, or FOKYERBYR) and who had seen a traditional healer for a specific health problem (FOKTREAT), FOKNOCONV identifies those who had received no conventional medical treatment for the condition for which they most saw a traditional healer (FOKTCONMOST).

The survey question for FOKNOCONV collected information about the use of specific conventional medical treatments for the condition for which a traditional healer was seen the most, if the person had received conventional medical treatment. The specific treatments asked about were:

• Mental health counseling (FOKCOUN)

• Prescription medications (FOKPMED)

• Over-the-counter medications (FOKNPMED)

• Physical therapy (FOKPT)

• Surgery (FOKSURG)

Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which the traditional healer was seen the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
