Description

For sample persons age 18 and older who reported to have experienced stress, EMOTHERCON reports whether or not within the last year the person thought of seeking help from a therapist, counselor (helping professional) or self-help group for personal/emotional problems.

EMOTHERCON is part of a series of variables related to sources of help with adult personal or emotional problems, as well as the amount of help received by each source. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IHIS weights.

A small change occurred in the questions design. In 1985 and 1990, the source of help was worded as "helping professional or a self-help group." In 1993, it changed slightly to "a therapist, counselor or self-help group."

Universe

  • 1985: Sample persons age 18+.
  • 1990: Sample persons age 18+ who knew what stress was.
  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 3 and 4 (excluded from AIDS supplement).
