Description

For sample children DEAFEV identifies those who ever had deafness or trouble hearing. The variable is part of a group of child conditions variables in the 1988 survey. Interviewers asked, "These next questions are about other health conditions [child's name] may have ever had," and proceeded to ask about a number of health conditions. Respondents could report more than one condition, as interviewers were instructed to enter all that applied.

Related Variables
Affirmative responses to DEAFEV were followed by questions on if the deafness was present in the last 12 months; if the child had the condition for at least 3 months throughout his or her lifetime, and if the condition was "obviously permanent that began less than 3 months ago."
